After a busy spring, I am relieved that summer is here but predictably, things do not slow down at the Mission during the “dog days of summer”. Before I mention our Summer Camp program, let me tell you how excited I am that over 20 students from the Mission graduated from area high schools this May. I think I look more relieved than the students in the photo above as high school graduations represent the culmination of our successful efforts at the Mission. As you know, we envision a community where all educationally at-risk students graduate from high school empowered with the life skills necessary to make wise decisions in life. Whether they pursue higher education or go directly to work, graduates of the Mission will be equipped with the tools they need to be successful. I think we have achieved our goal with these talented individuals and everyone: our Board, volunteers, donors and staff, could not be more proud.
Summer Camp begins in earnest on July 6th and as always, we are expecting a lot of children this year. Many of our students struggle to access educational opportunities over the summer as well as basic needs such as healthy meals and adequate supervision. Studies indicate that children of lower socioeconomic backgrounds and ethnic minorities lose more than 2 months of grade level equivalency in math and literacy related skills compared to their middle class peers.
To help, this summer the Mission hopes to offer computers for students to practice grade level IXL Math and Language Arts online and much more. In the afternoons, the children enjoy fun and games: a combination of arts and crafts, field trips and team activities. The camp is offered M-F from 9-3. Perhaps you will consider a donation of $330 to support a camper for 3 weeks? To make it easy, you can donate online.
If you plan to volunteer at Summer Camp, I look forward to seeing you. Otherwise, I hope you and your family finds some time to unwind, rest and be together over the summer.
When summer ends, be sure to join us for our annual fundraiser, the Celebration of Hope Tastes and Toasts cocktail party on August 29th and the 8th annual Celebration of Hope Golf Challenge on Monday, August 31st. It will be a fun weekend of events designed to raise vital funds for our programs.
Happy Summer!
